Delivering Professional Trailer Training Across the Midlands
Beyond Driving has been delivering Lantra Trailer Handling training across the Midlands throughout the month, supporting organisations in the utilities, public sector and infrastructure industries with practical, real-world driver development.
From Derby to Stoke, and across to Tewkesbury and Shropshire, our instructors have worked with a wide range of teams, ensuring drivers are confident, capable and compliant when towing in demanding environments.

National Grid Training in Derby, Alfreton and Stoke
A significant part of this month’s delivery has been with National Grid, providing consistent, high-quality training across multiple depots.
In Derby, candidates completed a full day of structured training, focusing on safe manoeuvring, coupling procedures and reversing techniques in a busy operational yard. The session reflected the realities of daily work, with trailers and equipment positioned in tight spaces, requiring precision and control.
At the Alfreton depot, the course continued with a mix of practical exercises and coaching. Drivers worked through controlled reversing tasks, learning how to position trailers accurately while maintaining full awareness of surroundings—essential for depot and roadside operations.
Training in Stoke built on these foundations, with another group of National Grid operatives completing their Lantra Trailer Handling course. Here, emphasis was placed on vehicle checks, load security and safe towing practices, ensuring every candidate understood both the theory and its application in the field.

Real-World Training Environments
The environments used during training are central to its effectiveness. Rather than relying on artificial setups, Beyond Driving delivers courses in live operational settings, including:
- Industrial yards with restricted space
- Depots with active vehicle movement
- Rural and uneven ground conditions
- Confined areas requiring accurate reversing
This approach ensures candidates develop skills that directly transfer to their day-to-day roles.

Gloucestershire County Council: Training Near Tewkesbury
Beyond Driving also delivered a Lantra Trailer Handling Operators course near Tewkesbury for Gloucestershire County Council.
Set against a mixed environment of yard space and rural access, the course focused on:
- Safe hitching and unhitching procedures
- Reversing trailers into confined spaces
- Managing trailer stability and load balance
- Awareness of pedestrians and site hazards
For council teams working across highways and rural infrastructure, these skills are essential for both safety and efficiency.

Supporting DeterTech and Foxtrax in Shropshire
In Shropshire, Beyond Driving delivered training for DeterTech on behalf of Foxtrax, demonstrating the flexibility of our courses across different sectors.
This session included a mix of experience levels:
- Two candidates completing a refresher course, sharpening existing skills
- One candidate gaining a solid grounding in trailer handling, with limited prior experience
This balance allowed instructors to tailor delivery, ensuring each driver progressed at the right pace while maintaining high standards throughout.

Building Confidence Through Practical Coaching
Across all locations, the focus remains the same: building confidence through structured, hands-on training.
Candidates worked through key elements of trailer handling, including:
- Daily vehicle and trailer safety checks
- Correct coupling and uncoupling techniques
- Straight-line and offset reversing
- Awareness, observation and hazard management
- Legal responsibilities when towing
By the end of each course, drivers demonstrated improved control, awareness and decision-making—key factors in reducing incidents and improving operational safety.
Why Lantra Trailer Handling Training Matters
For organisations operating in sectors such as utilities, construction and local government, trailer use is a daily requirement. However, towing incidents remain a common cause of damage, downtime and risk.
Lantra-accredited training provides:
- Nationally recognised certification
- Consistent, structured learning outcomes
- Practical assessment in real working conditions
- Improved compliance with health and safety standards
Beyond Driving’s experienced instructors ensure every course is relevant, engaging and aligned with the realities of each client’s operation.

Trusted Training Across the Midlands
This month’s activity highlights Beyond Driving’s continued role in supporting organisations across the Midlands with professional driver training that delivers measurable results.
Whether working with national infrastructure providers like National Grid or local authorities and specialist contractors, the goal is always the same: safer drivers, safer vehicles and safer workplaces.
