Safe, compliant towing for professional drivers on the public road

Towing trailers on the public road places additional legal, mechanical and behavioural demands on drivers. Increased stopping distances, altered vehicle handling and heightened risk to other road users mean that inadequate training can quickly lead to incidents, damage or enforcement action. Beyond Driving’s On-Road Trailer Handling Training equips professional drivers with the skills, awareness and judgement required to tow safely, legally and confidently on UK roads.

This course is designed for organisations whose staff tow trailers, plant or equipment as part of their role, whether routinely or occasionally.

Who this on-road trailer handling course is for

This training is suitable for drivers who tow trailers on the public highway, including:

  • Utilities, highways and infrastructure teams

  • Local authorities and environmental services

  • Construction, maintenance and engineering teams

  • Emergency services and support units

  • Any organisation with towing responsibilities under PUWER

The course supports both new and experienced drivers, helping to standardise competence and reduce risk across fleets.

Why on-road trailer handling requires specific training

Towing fundamentally changes how a vehicle behaves on the road. Steering response, braking performance and stability are all affected, particularly at speed or in traffic. Drivers must also operate within a clear legal framework covering licence entitlement, weights and vehicle condition.

Our training focuses on:

  • Understanding vehicle and trailer dynamics

  • Managing braking distances and road positioning

  • Preventing snaking, jack-knifing and instability

  • Complying with UK towing legislation and licence rules

The emphasis is on anticipation, smooth control and hazard awareness, supporting safer interaction with other road users.

Delivery

Realistic on-road training environments

Beyond Driving delivers on-road trailer training on public roads and suitable training areas to reflect everyday driving conditions. Where possible, training is delivered using the vehicles and trailers drivers operate at work, ensuring immediate relevance and improved confidence.

Aimed At

Compliance, PUWER and employer responsibility

When trailers are used for work, they are classed as work equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). Employers must ensure that drivers are adequately trained and competent to tow safely on the road.

On-road trailer handling training supports:

  • PUWER compliance

  • Reduced collision and damage risk

  • Clear evidence of driver competence

  • Improved fleet safety and governance
