For many professional drivers, reaching the job is not always as straightforward as following a road. Telecommunications infrastructure can be located well away from the public highway, with access involving forestry tracks, unmade routes, steep gradients and uneven ground.

That makes competent off-road driving an important operational skill for teams who may need to take 4×4 vehicles into remote locations.

Beyond Driving has recently been near Maidstone, Kent, delivering Lantra 4×4 operator training for BT, providing drivers with practical experience of operating a four-wheel-drive vehicle across the type of challenging terrain they may encounter during their working roles.

BT’s network extends across the UK, including infrastructure serving rural and hard-to-reach locations. BT itself highlights the challenges presented by the UK’s varied geography and the need to provide connectivity to remote communities.

The recent Kent training is a good example of why professional 4×4 training goes considerably further than simply learning how to drive a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Why telecommunications teams need off-road driving skills

For BT personnel whose roles require access to remote infrastructure, leaving the public highway can be part of the job. A route that appears straightforward in good conditions can become significantly more demanding because of gradient, loose surfaces, ruts, vegetation or changing weather.

The photographs from our Maidstone course show exactly the sort of environment in which these skills matter. Drivers worked with a Toyota Hilux across woodland tracks, narrow routes, uneven surfaces and substantial gradients.

Rather than teaching drivers simply to get a vehicle through an obstacle, professional 4×4 operator training develops the judgement required to decide how – and sometimes whether – an obstacle should be tackled.

That distinction is important.

Reading the terrain before driving it

One of the fundamental skills in off-road driving is learning to assess the ground ahead.

On a public road, the surface, gradients and route have largely been engineered for vehicles. Once a driver leaves the road, those assumptions disappear.

A woodland track can present several challenges simultaneously. Drivers need to consider available traction, ground clearance, wheel placement, gradients, ruts and potential hazards alongside the dimensions and capabilities of the vehicle.

The BT training near Maidstone provided an environment where these decisions could be practised under professional instruction.

Lantra’s Off Road Vehicle Operating (4×4) training specifically covers assessing the suitability of the ground and route, making structured decisions about obstacles, driving over varied terrain and carrying out an on-site risk assessment.

Managing steep gradients safely

Several of the exercises undertaken in Kent involved significant inclines and descents.

Gradient work is an important part of developing an operator’s understanding of a 4×4. Drivers need to appreciate how the vehicle’s weight and available traction change as it moves over uneven terrain, while maintaining controlled speed and selecting an appropriate route.

Lantra’s syllabus includes practical off-road operating techniques and procedures such as dealing with a failed hill climb.

The objective isn’t speed. It is controlled, considered vehicle operation.

For employees who may be driving to telecommunications equipment or other infrastructure in remote areas, being able to assess a slope before committing the vehicle can be every bit as important as knowing how to drive it.

Understanding what a 4×4 can – and cannot – do

Modern four-wheel-drive vehicles are extremely capable, but their technology doesn’t remove the need for operator competence.

Professional training helps drivers understand the systems available to them and how those systems relate to terrain, grip and vehicle behaviour.

The Lantra course includes vehicle checks and preparation, vehicle systems and components, operating techniques, route assessment, different terrain and the principles surrounding vehicle recovery.

This develops something particularly valuable for occupational drivers: an understanding of the vehicle’s limitations as well as its capabilities.

That can help a driver recognise when conditions are suitable to continue and when an alternative approach may be required.

Training that reflects the working environment

At Beyond Driving, we believe professional driver training is most valuable when it reflects what people actually encounter at work.

Our photographs from Kent demonstrate this approach. The Hilux is shown negotiating confined woodland tracks, gradients, rutted surfaces and open off-road sections rather than simply being driven around a flat training area.

The result is training that puts techniques into context.

For organisations operating nationally, this can be particularly important because terrain can vary enormously between different sites and regions.

Lantra 4×4 operator training for professional drivers

Lantra’s Off Road Vehicle Operating (4×4) course is designed for people operating off-road vehicles in an off-road environment, including those looking to meet workplace health and safety requirements associated with their use.

Training combines theory with practical vehicle operation and can include:

  • vehicle checks and preparation; understanding 4×4 controls and systems; assessing terrain and selecting a safe route; negotiating gradients and obstacles; driving across different surfaces; recognising vehicle limitations; identifying and managing off-road risks; and understanding safe vehicle recovery principles.

Interestingly, BT’s own Emergency Response Team lists Lantra 4×4 Off Road among the specialist skills in which its personnel are trained, alongside disciplines including flood operations and swift-water rescue.

4×4 training for the communications and infrastructure sectors

Telecommunications is just one industry where employees may need to operate beyond the normal road network.

Beyond Driving provides professional off-road driver training for organisations working across telecommunications, utilities, construction, engineering, environmental management, emergency response and other infrastructure-related sectors.

Our training can be delivered nationally, allowing organisations with drivers working across multiple locations to establish a consistent approach to off-road vehicle competence.

Beyond Driving offers a range of options including Lantra 4×4 training, 4×4 familiarisation, BORDA 4×4 driver training and professional 4×4 driver training, enabling training to be matched to the vehicles, operating environment and responsibilities of individual teams.

Another successful course in Kent

The Maidstone course provided another productive day of professional driver training for the Beyond Driving team and the BT personnel taking part.

More importantly, it provided drivers who may need to travel beyond the public road network with an opportunity to develop their skills in a controlled environment before those skills are required operationally.

When the job takes a driver away from tarmac and onto woodland tracks, fields, steep gradients or rough access routes, knowing how to operate a 4×4 properly can make a significant difference.
