At Beyond Driving, we deliver specialist off-road driver training and instructor courses designed for emergency response teams working in the toughest environments. Recently, our team has been working with the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) near Bridgend, South Wales, delivering a Polaris UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) and Winch Instructor Course accredited through Qualsafe.

Why Polaris UTV Training Matters for Emergency Services
HART teams operate at the sharp end of emergency response. Whether accessing remote rural landscapes, supporting major incident operations, or navigating hazardous terrain, the ability to drive and deploy specialist Polaris off-road vehicles safely and effectively is critical.
UTVs provide:
- Rapid access to casualties in remote areas
- Capability to carry medical equipment across rough terrain
- Winching power for vehicle recovery and casualty access
- Reliability in adverse weather and ground conditions
Our bespoke instructor training courses ensure that frontline staff not only master these skills themselves, but can also train colleagues to the same high standard.

Training in the Welsh Hills
The landscapes of South Wales offer the perfect training environment for off-road driving. From steep hillsides to muddy tracks and uneven ground, these conditions replicate the real-world challenges HART teams face during live deployments.
Over several days of intensive training, Beyond Driving instructors worked alongside the Welsh Ambulance HART team on:
- Advanced UTV handling – operating safely across gradients, mud, and uneven ground
- Winching techniques – including recovery planning, load assessment, and fault analysis
- Instructor development – building the skills to assess, coach, and accredit future drivers
The focus on practical, scenario-based training ensures that participants are prepared for the unpredictable situations they encounter on the job.

Winching: A Core Skill for HART Operations
One of the key elements of the course was winching. Beyond Driving’s instructors emphasised:
- Correct use of equipment for both casualty access and vehicle recovery
- Identifying and analysing potential faults in winch systems
- Safe anchor point selection and risk management
- Controlled recovery techniques under operational pressure
These skills are vital for ensuring that emergency teams can safely recover equipment or vehicles without compromising personnel safety.

Qualsafe-Accredited Bespoke Instructor Training
This course was delivered under Qualsafe accreditation, giving delegates industry-recognised qualifications while tailoring the content to the specific needs of the HART team. Beyond Driving has extensive experience in delivering bespoke training solutions for emergency services, from Lantra 4×4 and ATV courses to BORDA off-road instruction.
The programme near Bridgend is now moving towards final assessment, with delegates demonstrating their ability not just to drive and recover UTVs, but also to train others effectively and consistently.
