Beyond Driving spent a productive and thoroughly engaging day yesterday delivering our Lantra Winch Operator Training course for the team at Natural England, working in challenging woodland terrain near Kidderminster.
Set within a typical conservation environment, the training focused on real-world recovery scenarios where vehicles can quickly become immobilised on soft, rutted ground. As the images show, the team worked in tight woodland tracks, navigating mud, uneven surfaces and restricted access routes—exactly the kind of conditions where safe and effective winching is essential.
Participants gained hands-on experience in:
- Safe winch setup and operation, including correct anchoring techniques using natural features such as trees
- Vehicle recovery from deep mud and inclines, replicating situations commonly encountered on nature reserves
- Use of recovery equipment, including strops, shackles and dampers to ensure controlled and safe pulls
- Team communication and positioning, critical when operating in confined environments
One exercise saw a vehicle carefully recovered along a narrow, muddy track using a forward winch line, with trainees managing line tension and positioning under close instructor guidance. Another scenario demonstrated controlled recovery between two vehicles, reinforcing safe working distances and coordination.
The course also incorporated equipment checks and maintenance, ensuring operators understand not just how to use a winch, but how to keep it reliable in demanding field conditions.
For organisations like Natural England, where staff regularly operate in remote and environmentally sensitive areas, this training provides vital skills to maintain safety, minimise disruption to the landscape, and keep operations moving.
