At Beyond Driving, we take pride in delivering high-quality, tailored off-road driver training across the UK. This weekend, our specialist instructors returned to Wells-next-the-Sea in North Norfolk to provide a Lantra-accredited Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) operator course to the dedicated volunteers of HM Coastguard.
While it’s not common for us to deliver training over the weekend, we know that emergency services work around the clock—and so do we. Meeting customer-specific requirements is at the heart of our flexible approach to training.
Supporting Search and Rescue with Real-World Training
HM Coastguard is a vital part of the UK’s emergency response system, with volunteer rescue teams on call 24/7. The Wells-next-the-Sea team covers a diverse coastal landscape including dunes, saltmarshes, and woodland tracks—terrain that demands robust capability, clear decision-making, and safe UTV operation under pressure.
Our Lantra UTV operator course is designed to prepare teams exactly for this. The training combines:
- Vehicle familiarisation
- Pre-use checks and maintenance
- Safe loading and towing
- Challenging off-road driving scenarios
- Risk assessment and site safety awareness
The result? Confident, competent drivers who are ready to deploy in dynamic and often hazardous environments.
Coastguard Capability: Polaris UTV and Support Vehicles
Training took place using the HM Coastguard’s Polaris side-by-side UTV, as well as their custom-liveried Hyundai response vehicle and specialist trailers. These vehicles are a lifeline for those in need and must be operated by personnel who understand their capabilities and limitations.
Our instructors—experts in 4×4 and off-road driver development—delivered hands-on, practical sessions tailored to the conditions at Wells. From navigating tight woodland paths to understanding weight distribution on sandy slopes, the team worked through real-world tasks they could encounter in a live call-out.
