Professional UTV Training for Council and Conservation Teams

Beyond Driving’s commitment to safety, compliance and real-world skills continues this summer with two new Lantra-accredited UTV Operator Training courses — one in Leicester for Oadby & Wigston Borough Council, and the other at Steart Marshes near Bridgwater for the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT). Both sessions support essential day-to-day operations using side-by-side utility vehicles in diverse working environments.

Safe UTV Operation for Oadby & Wigston Council

In Leicester, our instructors delivered practical, site-specific training for members of Oadby & Wigston Borough Council’s street scene and parks teams. With their newly acquired Polaris Ranger Diesel UTV ready for daily use, staff needed to ensure they were competent, compliant, and confident behind the wheel.

The training covered low-speed manoeuvring, off-road awareness, load security, and the importance of regular maintenance and pre-use checks. Delivered in a depot setting with public access signage and safety protocols in place, the course ensured operators could confidently integrate the vehicle into everyday roles ranging from greenspace management to winter maintenance support.

Supporting Environmental Work with WWT at Steart Marshes

Later in the week, Beyond Driving travelled to the Somerset coast to work with the WWT team at Steart Marshes, a flagship wetland centre where land management and conservation work is supported by all-terrain vehicles.

Our instructors delivered a tailored UTV operator course designed to equip the Steart Marshes team with the skills needed to safely navigate challenging coastal and marshland terrain. With wide, open expanses and uneven surfaces typical of the site, training placed strong emphasis on ground assessment, controlled descent, and safe operation on slopes.

Participants also gained practical experience with hill starts, obstacle avoidance, and weight distribution on rough terrain. The Lantra-accredited course concluded with an assessment to confirm that each operator met the national standard for UTV competence.
