Delivering safe, consistent and compliant driving standards across a fleet is essential for any organisation. Recently, Beyond Driving has been working with Barfen FM Ltd and National Grid, delivering a series of advanced driver risk assessments and development courses across multiple UK locations.

These sessions highlight how structured, real-world driver training can improve safety, reduce risk, and support operational efficiency.

Advanced On-Road Training with Barfen FM Ltd

Beyond Driving welcomed candidates from Barfen FM Ltd to our training area near Petersfield, Hampshire, where we delivered our Lantra Advanced On-Road Assessment and Development Course.

Using their operational vehicles, including fully liveried Ford Transit vans equipped for facilities management work, candidates were assessed in realistic conditions that reflect their day-to-day roles. This is a key part of our approach—training drivers in the vehicles they actually use, rather than generic training models.

The course culminated in successful candidates receiving nationally recognised certification, with drivers demonstrating improved awareness, smoother vehicle control, and more confident decision-making on the road.

Imagery from the day shows candidates proudly holding their certificates alongside their working vehicles, reinforcing the practical and outcome-focused nature of the training.

Supporting National Grid Across Gloucester, Worcester and Leicester

National Grid driver assessment Gloucester electric fleet vehicle

Alongside this, Beyond Driving has been delivering driver risk assessments for National Grid, supporting teams operating across multiple regions.

Our instructors conducted:

  • On-road assessments in Gloucester, at a National Grid operational site
  • Additional sessions earlier in the week in Worcester and Leicester

The assessments featured a range of fleet vehicles, including electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf, highlighting the growing importance of adapting driver behaviour to suit EV performance characteristics such as regenerative braking and instant torque.

Photographs from the sessions show drivers being assessed in real working environments, including secure depots and operational parking areas. These are not controlled test tracks—they are the same environments drivers navigate daily, ensuring the training remains relevant and practical.

Real-World Driver Assessment in Operational Environments

One of the defining features of Beyond Driving’s approach is delivering training in live, operational settings.

For both Barfen FM Ltd and National Grid, this included:

  • Navigating busy depot environments
  • Manoeuvring in tight parking areas and confined spaces
  • Driving a mix of urban and regional road networks
  • Operating vehicles with company branding, equipment, and real load conditions

This ensures that assessments go beyond theory, focusing instead on how drivers perform under genuine working pressures.

Why Driver Risk Assessments Are Essential

Driver risk assessments form a critical part of any organisation’s duty of care. For companies like Barfen FM Ltd and National Grid, where vehicles are integral to daily operations, they provide valuable insight into driver behaviour and risk exposure.

Key benefits include:

  • Identifying unsafe habits before they lead to incidents
  • Improving driver confidence and competence
  • Supporting compliance with health and safety requirements
  • Reducing vehicle damage and operational downtime
  • Enhancing fuel efficiency and vehicle longevity

By focusing on development as well as assessment, Beyond Driving ensures that drivers leave with clear, practical steps for improvement.
