Books for Learner Drivers

If you are studying towards your driving theory test, or need something to help you alongside your driving lessons, try these.

Essential Learner Books:

This is the one book I recommend to absolutely everyone. It is a guide to driving properly at any standard. There’s no jokes, no cartoons - it tells you how it should be and no more. In previous incarnations it was referred to as ‘The Driving Manual’, and that is what it is.

I’m sure I don’t need to explain why this one is important! Laws - Highlighted in red as ‘MUST’, and Rules of the road.

Other Useful Learner Books:

If you are bored with some of the more official books out there, this is by far the best of the rest (there really is some rubbish pedalled to help people through their tests - avoid it at all costs!). The author has an excellent background in driver training. I even recommend this one to driving instructors! It has a light but sensible tone, with lots of enjoyable exercises to help reinforce your practice and lessons.

Thoroughly good fun, and packed with information. Most of this could easily be re-packaged as a humorous guide to anyone passing their test, but there are some very useful tips which relate specifically to girls. There is also some excellent advice for nervous drivers.

Confidence is the key to passing your driving test, and though you may have the skills and knowledge to pass, you may need some instant confidence! This is a really good introduction to confidence building, and despite Paul McKenna being slightly scary, it really does what it says on the cover! If nerves are a problem to you, try this.

Hazard Perception & Theory CDROMS:

Probably the best value of all the combined Hazard Perception/Theory test CDROM packages. Most people do just fine with this.

This is the official verson from the DSA. This version seems to be slightly closer in the way it scores to the real thing, though it is less sensitive to clicking too often. If you have trouble with the hazard perception test, it may be worth trying.
